We live in a time where everything is at our fingertips, yet we regularly take it for granted. Albert Einstein
Albert Einstein, at the age 4 spoke for the first time and did not read until he was age 7. Both his parents thought he was “subnormal”, and one of his teachers had described him as “mentally slow”, unsociable and aloof forever with his foolish dreams. Einstein was then expelled from school.
Charles Schultz
Charles Schultz, the cartoon creator of the comic strip Peanuts, submitted his cartoon drawings to the yearbook staff at his high school and they were rejected. Schultz also applied for a position at Walt Disney and was rejected.
Harland David Sanders
Harland David Sanders, the founder of the fast food chain, Kentucky Fried Chicken, also known as Colonel Sanders. At First, Sanders had a hard time selling his chicken. In fact, his famous secret chicken recipe was rejected 1,009 times before a restaurant accepted it.
Henry Ford
Henry Ford, Despite the fact that Ford is nowadays recognized for his innovative assembly line and American-made cars, he wasn’t an overnight success. In actual fact, prior to founding the thriving Ford Motor Company, he went broke on five occasions during his earlier attempts that had all previously failed.
J. K. Rowling
J. K. Rowling, the author of the Harry Potter fantasy series was an unknown until her books became the best-sellers in history. Her life is a rags to riches story. Before Harry Potter was published, she was on the verge of becoming penniless, severely depressed, divorced, single parent trying to raise a child on her own. At the same time attending school and writing a novel. Rowling was once dependent on surviving on welfare to now becoming one of the richest women in the world in a span of only five years through her hard work and determination. According to Forbes, published in March 2011, Rowling’s was named in the world billionaire’s list, net worth estimated at US$1 billion.
The Beatles
The Beatles, were rejected in early February 1962 during an audition with Decca Records stating that “Guitar groups are on the way out”. Since the formation of the English rock band in 1960, The Beatles, known as the “Fab Four” became a household name and one of the most critically acclaimed and commercially successful bands in the history of Rock and Roll.
Thomas Edison
Thomas Edison, was told by his teachers that he was “too stupid to learn anything”. That Edison was fired from his first two jobs for being “non-productive”. As an inventor, during his attempt to invent the light bulb, tried unsuccessful more than a 1,000 times before he got it right. When a reporter asked Edison how it felt to fail 1,000 times, he said that he didn’t fail all those attempts, but merely, the light bulb was an invention with a 1,000 steps.
Walt Disney
Walt Disney, was fired by a newspaper editor because “he lacked imagination and had no good ideas”. Disney went bankrupt quite a few times before he built his Disneyland Empire. In fact, the original proposed park was rejected by the city of Anaheim, California, on the assumption that it would only attract the “riffraff”.
What would have happened if these Entrepreneurs had given up, believing they were doomed to failure from the beginning and would never achieve success. Do you think they ever felt frustrated, rejected, disillusioned and depressed? Sure they did. But they didn’t allow all the negativity and criticism to overshadow them, to overpower their determination and desire to succeed. In every circumstance the outcome was a Success, far greater than their expectations and wildest dreams.
Negative experiences can be viewed as positive in hindsight. They can be stepping stones rather than stumbling blocks. It’s your choice. But, be determined to never give up and quit your dreams.
